Aspros Potamos in Makry Gialos (Crete)

Aspros Potamos uses a solar photovoltaic system that won the First European Award for Greece. This system provides electricity for reading lights above beds, bathroom lights, and refrigerators in every cottage. Oil lamps and candles supply the main lighting, and there are no electrical sockets in the houses - guests charge devices at the reception area.

Ten individually designed cottages are built into the hillside rock, each with its own terrace, kitchenette, and private bathroom. House No2 is a split-level apartment with two bedrooms and a fireplace, accommodating up to 5 people. House No4 features a bed built into the original bedrock, creating a cave-like bedroom.

Breakfast is served in the reception area at the guest's preferred time after 09:30, with a one-day advance order required. A library with books, a computer with 24-hour internet access, and free WiFi are available in the reception room. Guests can use the BBQ facilities, free on-site parking, and borrow beach umbrellas or mattresses left by previous guests.

The settlement sits at the foot of the Pefki Gorge, a 7-kilometre hiking trail that ends at the village of Pefki. The central beach of Makry Gialos is a 2-kilometre sandy beach with Blue Flag status, clear shallow waters, and outdoor showers. The E4 European Long Distance Path passes through the area, linking the White Mountains to Mount Dikti.

The guest house is suitable for yoga seminars, Tai Chi workshops, and painting courses, with space for group sessions. Hiking in Pefki Gorge reveals kermes oak, lentisc, and olive trees, along with the Saracen's Rock and its folklore stones. Guests can also explore the nearby villages of Pefki, Lithines, and Koutsouras for traditional tavernas and local culture.
